Signs of Spring
Hellebores: orientalis above, niger below. A handsome workhorse in the garden, mostly for its foliage, but now its bloom seduces through decayed plant debris. The green march is on...
Blue Scilla next to Star of Bethlehem that I rip out every spring.

Early blossoms are so special, and these are beautiful; I especially like the first image, with bud amid the dried leaves. Nothing blooming here in Vermont yet, but lots of little green sprouts are showing.
Do you rip out scilla and star of Bethlehem both? Having any luck reducing the numbers?
Can't have enough Scilla! I only rip out Star of Bethlehem, kinda my annual Sysiphus channeling. I never get rid of it, but manage to contain it enough so I don't obsess every time I work in the garden.
As for Vermont: go green sprouts! A former student of mine now lives in Barre, I think. She is contemplating ripping out the turf in her front yard and doing some lasagna-style gardening. She has two kids so growing veggies will be excellent.
